Tips for business
Tips for business.
Here are a few business tips that I picked up along the way.
Life Chart
“Time is Money” – or so they say.
Download the Bowraven life chart here.
But to me Time is more valuable than that – Take a look at our “Life Chart” to see where you are in your life.
Life chart to work out your working days to retirement; How many holiday days you have to your retirement; Weekend/Non-work-days to retirement; and your days in retirement to the age you think you will live to.
This really highlights the numbers for you and will help you to focus your mind on your holiday days and days off.
This an Excel spreadsheet and seems to work best on a PC or MAC, but will open on a mobile or iPad if you have the app that works with Excel files, although the pie chart doesn’t seem to work on the iPad or iPhones.

Once you open the ‘Lifechart’, there are preset entries, as follows:
- How many days in the week do you work – (preset at 5, but change this to your circumstances)
- How many days holiday do you receive each year, including public holidays. (preset at 25, but change this to your circumstances)
- Age you expect to retire. (preset at 65, but change this to your circumstances)
- Anticipated age you think you might live to. (preset at 77, but change this to your circumstances)
All you need to then do is to enter your date of birth, in the format – (dd/mm/yyyy) – review the pie chart and the numbers to see how your future pans out.[/toggle]
Actions are to success as keys are to opening doors.
“Have you ever had one of those shower thoughts?”
I have them all of the time and when I do I write them down. By writing your thoughts and ideas down you are beginning the journey to a new and exciting future.
But don’t stop there…with your ideas simply left written down that’s what they will end up being, just ideas and unfulfilled dreams.
How would you get to work, unless you get up in the morning? Before you get up on time; you need to set your alarm the night before; and so on and so on…
Would you ever go on holiday unless you’d booked the trip beforehand?
Nothing happens without action.
The same goes for changing your life for the better – take a moment to make a list of the things you want to achieve in this world and don’t hold back, be as creative and exciting as you dare. But more importantly please, please take ACTION – a dream without action will remain a dream and a lost future.
“Success often comes to those who dare to act. It seldom goes to the timid who are ever afraid of the consequences.” Jawaharlal Nehru, First India Prime Minister
“Every achiever I have ever met says, my life turned around when I began to believe in me.” Robert Schuller, Author and Preacher
80/20 Rule – Pareto principle
Most people have heard of the 80/20 rule and this applies to most things in life. This is known as the Pareto principle.
You’ll find in business that 80% of your income will come from 20% of your customers.
Probably 80% of your problems will come from 20% of your staff.
80% of your time is spent doing unnecessary things whereas 20% is spent doing those important tasks in your life.
This is where you need to start to procrastinate, but I hear you saying surely this is a bad thing.
Not if you start to procrastinate over the tasks that don’t need to be done – leave these and concentrate your energies and time doing those activities that are important, those tasks that if left undone will begin to affect your life in a significant way – Call these “A” tasks if you like. At the beginning of each day make a list of the activities you are going to do that day.
Those activities that are going to make a difference to your life should be highlighted and put onto a separate list and call this your “A” list.
The separate list should include those activities that if they are not done then, either you are not going to move closer to your goals and dreams, or that you will run into problems if they are not done.
Then set about to do all the activities on your “A” list today! – A key “A” task is for you to make a plan for the future. A future that you want, instead of one that you fall into; a future that includes your dreams. Start to spend 80% of your time on your “A” tasks and this will begin to make a huge difference to your life.
Begin each day with a list of “A” tasks and make sure that they are done. If you start to do this exercise and to take a close look at what you do each day, you will be surprised at how much of it is a waste of time and in fact how much spare time you will have by not doing pointless tasks.
Spend a little time looking at your time – time cannot ever be replaced – once it has gone, it has gone forever.
Some people say that “Time is Money” well I disagree, because I can get loads of money and so can anyone, but you show me how to get back time once it has gone.
Time is precious – use it wisely.
